Musical Instruments > Wot (โหวด)
Originally used in the Isan region (northeastern Thailand)
to create sound by being swung through the air, the *wot*
later evolved into a wind instrument used in traditional folk ensembles.
Components:
*Wot* pipes (*luk wot*): Made from a type of bamboo
the same variety used to craft the *khaen* (a traditional mouth organ)
known among *khaen* makers as *mai ku khaen*.
Central axis (*kaen wot*): A bamboo stalk, whittled and shaped with
a "tail" section, which serves as the frame upon which the *wot*
pipes are arranged in musical sequence.
*Wot* head (*hua wot*): A rounded piece positioned beneath the player's lips.
By blowing air across the openings of the various *wot* pipes,
the player produces different musical notes. The head is designed to allow
the instrument to be easily rotated while playing. Traditionally,
it was crafted from *khi sut* (a type of natural resin/wax)
mixed with tree sap—such as that from the *chik* or *khaen* trees
though other materials may be used as substitutes today.
